The holidays are a time when many of us go 'home'. But increasingly across Wake and Johnston counties owning a home is a becoming further out of reach for families.

For thousands of people in our community, the word “home” does not evoke the nostalgia of warmth and peace this holiday season. Our communal work at Habitat Wake is unfinished. As we come to the end of 2022, we see that our friends, loved ones, and neighbors are being left behind. The gap is widening, and we can make a difference that addresses these pressing challenges:

1 in 4 families in Wake and Johnston counties lack access to affordable housing.
There is currently a shortage of 60,000 affordable units in Wake County.
Rising rent prices are putting residents at risk of eviction, displacement and homelessness.
15,000 evictions were filed across North Carolina last month.

Community Responsibility Builds

Habitat Wake is focused on building a community where everyone has a decent place to live. In 2022, we understand that the need for safe and affordable housing impacts everyone differently, and for some of our neighbors that means they have additional barriers to housing that we must work to address. Our Community Responsibility Builds are home projects that directly work with the most marginalized communities among us in Wake and Johnston counties. With your support, we aim to create long-term change. We envision change that removes barriers to housing for all of us, and specifically addresses the harms that these communities have historically had to overcome. We thank you for your support that allows us to take on this work, and we look forward to continuing these projects in 2023!

Women Build

Give to bring WOMEN home.

Habitat Wake has championed Women Build annually since 2009 by building homes primarily funded by and constructed by women. Join Women Build today, and be part of a group of allies who show up for their community.

Veterans Build

Give to bring VETERANS home.

In 2022 we launched our first ever Veteran's Build project focused on home preservation thanks to our partners at Met Life and Comerica Bank. Thanks to sponsors and volunteers these projects will wrap up in December 2022, and we look forward to working with more veterans in the coming year. Read about the current project.

Pride Build

Give to bring PRIDE home.

LGBTQ+ activism has brought hard-won progress on gender equality, and yet, research from the Center for American Progress shows that “more than 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ Americans faced discrimination of some kind in the past year, including more than 3 in 5 transgender Americans."

Fiesta Build

Give to bring Latino and Hispanic families home.

The Fiesta Build brings the Latino faith community leaders and advocates together to build relationships and build homes with families in need of affordable housing. The Fiesta Build in 2021 was held in Apex on Kissena Lane. Read more about the Fiesta Build.

Hope Builders

Give to bring HOPE home.

At Habitat Wake we are thankful for our Hope Builders. Our Hope Builders are committed to sustaining the work of Habitat Wake through leadership giving of $1,000 or more each year. These gifts support all of our ongoing projects and allow us to expand our work to better serve our community. A gift at this level leaves a legacy of change, and we are thankful for this dedicated support!

Interfaith Build

Give to bring FAITH home.

Believing is not enough for us. So we build together. The Interfaith Build brings different religious faith communities together to strengthen relationships while serving families in need of affordable housing. The vision of our Interfaith Build is to work together to create 'The Beloved Community' where every one of us has a decent place to live and a brighter future together.

40th Anniversary

Blueprints for the Future: Barbara Quinby
In 1987, Barbara Quinby and her husband had recently relocated to Raleigh from Florida with their two children. She was working as a draftsperson for a building company, utilizing her degree in interior residential design

“When I heard Habitat had started around here, I just knew that was something I had to get involved with if the opportunity presented itself,” Barbara recalls.

Health and Housing: Sharon's Story
For Sharon Watson, the past year has been a battle for stability. A mother, grandmother, and dedicated employee at the Department of Health and Human Services, she has spent much of her time navigating the stress of housing insecurity. NC State’s Habitat Chapter: Decades of Dedication to Affordable Housing
As Habitat for Humanity of Wake County celebrates 40 years of building homes, communities and hope, one long-standing partnership stands out: the Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter at NC State University. From its beginnings, the chapter has been a strong force in engaging students by spreading awareness and facilitating connections to Habitat’s mission through transformative projects.

40th Anniversary

40 Years of Building Together
This year Habitat Wake turns 40. In 1985, while serving as a seminary intern at Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh, the pastor gave me the freedom to help form a local Habitat organization as the focus of my internship.

God was already at work. Various groups were gathering to pursue a housing ministry, including a group in Wake Forest and Franklin County that was pursuing the Habitat model.
