Lester stepped into the backyard of the lot in Johnston County that will soon become his forever home. His eyes widened as he took in the expanse of space. This Clayton neighborhood offers particularly large yards for Habitat Wake homes, and to Lester, the possibilities were endless. "I could get a whole garden out here," he said, imagining the rows of fresh produce that could fill the space. "I work for the food bank in Raleigh, and I used to teach urban farming classes."

This fall, Habitat Wake is proud to celebrate our veterans through a Season of Service. From September 11 – December 7, we will bring together veterans and their allies for multiple Veterans Build events aimed at honoring our service members, fostering community engagement and raising awareness of the specific housing challenges faced by the veteran community. 

Voting is a powerful way to support affordable housing at every level of government. Federal, state, and local elections all have an impact on housing.

With a clipboard in hand and a smile lighting up her face, Ayofemi stepped out into the sunshine at Old Poole Place. Today was a special milestone—her lot selection day.

"I'm really excited and at the same time, it's a lot to choose from, you know?" Ayofemi shared. "It's my first home. They're all beautiful homes. It's just going to be what's the right fit for me and my family"

Ask a child what they want for their birthday, and you might hear some similar answers: maybe a Lego set or an art project, maybe a new soccer ball or video game. But not for nine-year-old Cora June. This year, she had a different wish: to host a lemonade stand and raise money for Habitat.

CJ spent a 95° birthday weekend selling lemonade and orangeade in her neighborhood and at her grandparents’ congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, a Habitat Faith Partner of at least 10 years.

With countless voices weighing in on millennial homeownership challenges and trends, we wanted to spotlight one individual's story. Meet Mary! She's a copywriter, textile artist, and one of our brand new partner homebuyers! We were lucky enough to connect with her about her experiences. Here's what she had to say: 

What challenges did you face pursuing homeownership?

This June, amid the flurry of Home Builders Blitz, an unexpected reunion unfolded. Among the many subcontractors coming out that week was Tyleam Edwards and his insulation crew. But this wasn't his first time stepping onto a Habitat for Humanity site.

As families face rising costs and limited housing inventory, the need for innovative and inclusive approaches becomes more evident, including options that serve multi-generational families. Our partner homebuyer, Hasna, not only purchased a home for herself but also guided her parents through the same process. Now, they will be living just two doors apart, creating a beautiful intergenerational neighborhood.
