“My apartment had gotten too small for us,” Kandy said. “So I was like, well, what could be next? I’m a kitchen supervisor at a restaurant, and things were going good. I felt like I was ready to buy something. I was just in the right spot.”
Kandy and her children were ready for a change. Imagine trying to squeeze four kids (including a set of energetic twin boys) into a small apartment. Space was tight, and it was time to dream bigger.
All applicants accepted into Habitat Wake’s homeownership program must meet certain financial guidelines to qualify for a mortgage and maintain long-term stability. But approval is just the beginning, it marks the start of working closely with our team to build financial confidence for the future. Homebuyers in our program complete a series of classes, including financial education courses designed to ensure they’re set up for long-term success.
For Kandy, that part of the journey was transformational.
“I had my money up and was in a good spot before I applied,” she said. “But I learned in the finance classes that I’m more of a spender. This program has taught me so much about my money. I’ve saved so much over the course of being in this program. It’s been really empowering to know more about my money and see that change as I get ready to own my home.”
For many families, buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions they’ll ever make. At Habitat Wake, we walk alongside our buyers every step of the way, helping them prepare for everything from HOA fees to lawn care and long-term maintenance costs. We believe that education and preparation lead to confidence, and confidence builds strong communities.
Now, Kandy and her children are settling into their new home.
“My kids will always have a place to call home,” she said. “They’ve been riding their scooters up and down the neighborhood. I got to plant me a peach tree in the backyard. I always wanted a fruit tree.”
We're thrilled for Kandy and her children to grow into their new home and continued financial freedom. If you'd like to learn more about our program, visit our website here.
