Advocates help create lasting change

Advocate with Habitat Wake! 

Through our advocacy work, Habitat Wake is mobilizing local partners, volunteers and community members to promote better housing policies locally, statewide and nationally. We are seeking volunteers to work 5-20 hours per week on outreach, mobilization efforts, and policy research related to access to affordable housing. Advocacy Volunteers will work directly with Habitat Wake’s advocacy staff. 

Responsibilities may include:  

  • Provide logistical support for key advocacy events, such as Elected Officials Build day and Habitat at the NC Legislature   

  • Meet with local policymakers to promote housing policies and decisions  

  • Help to mobilize our networks to act on important issues as they emerge 

  • Maintain a database of timely, relevant housing articles for the Communications team to share with the public  

  • Regularly monitor municipal government activity (commission/council agendas) and highlight any meeting topics related to affordable housing that we should be aware of  

  • Conduct policy research on issues related to home affordability to inform our advocacy efforts   

  • Support staff in raising awareness for affordable housing needs and engaging community stakeholders in issue-based housing campaigns 

Advocacy volunteers should possess the following qualifications or be willing to develop their skills through training: 

  • Interest in affordable housing issues and passion for Habitat Wake’s mission 

  • Interest in advocacy, policy, and/or research   

  • Experience or interest in organizing people for a cause  

  • Strong communication skills and ability to persuade people to take action
