Neighborhood Revitalization

Having an affordable place to call home is essential. That is why we will be joining over 700 Habitat advocates at our annual legislative conference, Habitat on the Hill, to virtually meet with lawmakers in Congress to push for affordable housing policies to benefit our communities.    

Here’s what we will be asking for:

Even though it quickly downgraded, Hurricane Florence has deeply affected the coasts of North and South Carolina and is hitting communities hard. Widespread flooding, debris, loss of power, and downed trees threatened homes, livelihood, and well being.

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County is one of nearly 40 Habitat affiliates partnering with Valspar, Habitat’s national paint partner, and Wells Fargo, to launch A Brush with Kindness Week Sept. 19-26.  A Brush with Kindness Week is a nationwide effort to transform neighborhoods by painting, providing minor exterior home repairs, landscaping and cleaning up yards in partnership with more than 130 low-income homeowners, many of whom are elderly or have a disability. Locally, 100 Habitat for Humanity volunteers will work on five projects nextWednesday Sept. 23 – Saturday, Sept.

Habitat Wake will reach a special milestone on August 8. We will complete our 100^th A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) project at the home of The Wilson Family in Raleigh’s Apollo Heights neighborhood.

This past Saturday, I made it a point to stop by the Jubilee community in Wake Forest to see the great work that was happening there with our A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) exterior home repair program.

In all of my years at Habitat, nearly 25 now, I have always felt blessed to be in such a positive place where people bring their best to share with others.  When it works well, Habitat is a true cycle where those who give, receive through and through.

This morning, I was honored to receive a check from Wells Fargo for $90,000 to support the complete renovation of two more homes in southeast Raleigh’s Long Acres community.  These projects will get underway in October.

I went to lunch last Tuesday, with my 22 year old twin sons.  While I stepped away to the restroom, the check arrived, and to my pleasant surprise, my son Micah picked up the check! My take-away on this is that things do change in significant ways over time.  I’ve bought Micah many meals over the years and to have him pay for one signifies a major change that is a generation long in coming.
