April 24, 2025, may very well be the day the Yes in God’s Back Yard movement took hold in our community. After years of discernment and planning, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church received official approval from the Cary Town Council to rezone their underutilized property for their pioneering Carr Center project, making way for 62 units of affordable housing on their campus.

This year Habitat Wake turns 40. In 1985, while serving as a seminary intern at Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh, the pastor gave me the freedom to help form a local Habitat organization as the focus of my internship.

God was already at work. Various groups were gathering to pursue a housing ministry, including a group in Wake Forest and Franklin County that was pursuing the Habitat model.

Apex Town Council Seeks to Prevent Displacement 

The people of faith were instrumental in all these wins.

Each year, the board of every Habitat for Humanity organization in the country will sign the Affiliate Covenant -- the foundational document of Habitat. This simple, yet profound document has guided the Habitat movement for 48 years. Annually reflecting on the Covenant helps to keep our powerful theology alive.

Apex churches are following Jesus in standing with the vulnerable. As an Apex resident, I could not be prouder.

On September 24, Apex area churches took the lead in mobilizing approximately 75 people, filling the council chamber, asking the Apex Council to protect approximately 1,100 residents in three Apex manufactured home communities that are vulnerable to displacement from redevelopment. Quoting key concepts of their faith, 4 church leaders lovingly spoke and their congregants quietly held “Protect our Community!” signs.

Remarks to the Cary Town Council from Rev. Melinda Merkley King, transitional pastor at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church

Hello Cary Town Council and fellow members of the Cary Community. I am Melinda Merkley King, and I currently serve as transitional pastor at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Cary. Our congregation would certainly supply willing workers for this project should it be approved.

Habitat for Humanity International is a global Christian housing ministry. At home dedications all over the world, we have a tradition of presenting a Bible to the homebuyers.

We have this tradition because the founders of Habitat started this ministry based on what they read in the pages of the Bible.​​​​ They were convinced that Jesus was radically inclusive, ​​​​​​and so should we be.
