Last week, Wolf Plaza transformed into a special kind of Habitat build site. The Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter at NC State University hosted Shack-A-Thon 2026, bringing dozens of student organizations together to fundraise for Habitat Wake.
The event kicked off Sunday, March 29, with students working side by side to build unique structures from the ground up to camp out in during their week of fundraising.
Throughout the week, students sold items (and experiences) to raise money for Habitat. From plants and baked goods to Lego raffles, Pokémon cards and games of “stump,” each group brought something unique to engage the campus community and spread awareness of Habitat’s affordable housing mission.

“I’m so glad that at NC State, we have a community of people who are rallying behind this message and want to support the community around us,” said Shack-A-Thon Director and Habitat Campus Chapter Member Caroline Kenneally.
The event has brought together thousands of people and raised more than $600,000 for affordable housing in Wake and Johnston counties since 1991.
“I love the opportunity for all different student groups to come together for the same cause,” said Taylor Tracz, director of Shack-A-Thon 2025. “You get to talk to so many amazing people and learn about different groups on campus.”
For many students, the most meaningful part of Shack-A-Thon isn’t just the funds raised, but the relationships built along the way. Spending a week together fundraising creates lasting connections and a shared sense of purpose.
“I think sometimes when you’re on a college campus, it can feel like you’re living in a bubble. You’re not really thinking about some of the issues that are impacting the community right around you,” said Tracz. “Even in our area, right around us in our county, there are people in need of affordable housing.”
The Habitat team is so grateful for the support of these incredible students, donors, alumni and the entire NC State Community. We can't wait to see you all again for Shack-A-Thon 2027!
