Shortage Of Housing?

April 3, 2011

At Thursday’s annual Habitat Blueprint Breakfast at the North Raleigh Hilton, our guest speaker, Frank Anton, a leading expert on the home building industry asked attendees how many believed that there is currently a housing shortage.  Of the nearly 600 attendees, 2 raised their hands.  Frank proclaimed that the others were wrong. He went on to speak that despite the current general oversupply of housing in the U.S. market, there has always been and continues to be a shortage of affordable housing.  Frank, CEO of the Hanley-Wood Corporation, publishers of BUILDER magazine, reported that his company showed in its annual list of the top 100 home builders that Habitat for Humanity was the only top 10 builder to increase production in the past year.  He related that to the simple economics paradigm of supply and demand. We are proud at Habitat Wake to be serving 21 families with new homes this year and 10 additional families through our A Brush With Kindness exterior home repair program.  We are currently working on plans for our next fiscal year budget to serve 25 families with new and/or substantially rehabilitated homes and 20 additional families through A Brush With Kindness.
