We have been notified that our donor database provider, Blackbaud, was subject to a ransomware attack earlier this year affecting thousands of organizations across the globe, including Habitat for Humanity affiliates. While Habitat Wake was among those impacted, we have been assured by Blackbaud that no sensitive information like credit card numbers, banking information or Social Security numbers was compromised. According to Blackbaud, the data at issue includes names, addresses and other publicly available information. Blackbaud has posted some additional detail on their website.
It took several months to fully understand the extent of the breach, and Blackbaud hired a third-party team of forensic experts to assist them with their investigation. While Blackbaud is confident the breached data has been destroyed, out of an abundance of caution, it is continuing to monitor for any disclosure of the copied information. Blackbaud has long engaged strong encryption mechanisms to ensure that sensitive data is always protected in the payment process and in database records. We will continue to work with Blackbaud to ensure our comfort with their cybersecurity remedial measures with respect to this matter.
We very much regret the inconvenience that this incident may have caused. Please be assured that we take information protection very seriously and are grateful for your continued support!
