Hike for Habitat

On Sunday, November 4, 2007, local youth enjoyed a fabulous fall a great afternoon of hiking and playing games at Blue Jay Point County Park.
Hikes were as short as 0.5 mile and as long as 2 miles. There were hammering contests, youth-friendly building projects, games, coloring, snacks and prizes!
Through hike sponsorships and recycling participants rai$ed for Habitat. The money youth rai$ed will be used to purchase home maintenance tools for Habitat families.
Youth who want to hike together can register together and turn in one registration form. There is a general $5 fee for youth ages 5-18. Kids under 5 and adults over 18 get in free! The money raised will go toward buying basic tools for home and garden.
- In 2006, youth raised $2,421! 81 youth participated in Hike for Habitat on the afternoon of Sunday, October 29, 2006. In advance of the event, they collected 4,200 aluminum cans (74 lbs) and raised $2,421 through converting cans to cash and through contributions from family and friends!!!
In Fall 2008, Habitat can provide flyers to help you promote this event at your school, club or other organization.
Volunteer Opportunities for Youth, Pre-Teens and Teens
Learn, grow & make a difference! Youth learn fundraising, teamwork and leadership as they work on service projects together. Youth develop character through their experiences and grow into the next generation of leaders. Youth make a lasting impact on our community. Habitat welcomes the talents and enthusiasm of youth.
You have to be 16 to build on a Habitat site or volunteer in the ReStore, but building is not the only way to get involved. The following activities are fun and lend support for the Habitat homeownership mission:
- Cans for Habitat recycling program
- painting "house-shaped" sponsor signs to post on build sites
- creating handmade crafts for new Habitat homeowners
- organizing fundraisers such as a car wash, bake sale, craft sale or a talent show
Shanna Newell helps youth and youth leaders organize programs. To get going on any of these activities, contact her at 833-1999 x223 or youth@habitatwake.org. Consider resources from Habitat for Humanity International, too.

Waiver of Liability Form for Youth Volunteers
While Habitat Wake staff take every precaution to ensure a safe, enjoyable work experience for our volunteers, construction sites do present certain dangers. Habitat relies on mature, responsible volunteers, capable of working with minimum supervision. Accordingly, it is our policy to require the parents or guadians of volunteers under the age of 19 to sign a Consent Waiver of Liability Form.
Please bring the signed form to site on the scheduled workday. Please do not send this form to the office.
