FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHO DO I REPORT TO? Staff Construction Supervisor For This Week: Rick Kelly (795-0124)
WHAT IF IT RAINS? In case of questionable weather: We will not work in a heavy rain or in very wet conditions. If you are in doubt as to weather, volunteers can call our inclement weather hotline after 7:00 am @ 919-833-1999 x 240.
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING? Task(s) for the day: Interior painting & trim
WHAT TOOLS DO I BRING? It is very helpful to Habitat if volunteers come with their own basic tools, but it is not required. Please label all tools you bring to the site with your name and/or Group
Basic Tools: Work gloves, hammer, tape measure, tool belt or nail apron, and pencil.
WHEN IS LUNCH? Please bring your own lunch (or plan for your group to provide) to eat on site, a cooler to store it in, and plenty of water or other drinks to last the entire workday. Lunch is approximately 11-11:30 most workdays.
When You Arrive At the Site: Important Information To Know
• Please arrive at the site at 7:15am. If you arrive earlier, please wait to receive instructions from your site supervisor until that time. We usually finish by 3pm. Make arrangements with the Volunteer Coordinator if you need a different finish time. Plan to work for the entire scheduled time that your group has signed up for. If you are working an afternoon shift, please do not arrive earlier than 1pm.
• It is extremely important that your group shows up on time, with the number of volunteers you promised. Please remember that a family who needs decent housing will have to wait another week if your group does not come through.
• FOLLOW THE SIGNS OR ASK WHERE TO FIND THE VOLUNTEER SIGN-IN STATION. Checking in is your first priority when you arrive on the site.
• All volunteers must be at least 16. All youth under the age of 18 will need a Parental or Guardian Consent Form to work. You must bring this form with you to the site when you check-in. Youth ages 16 and 17 must have adults present and providing supervision at a ratio of no less than 1 adult to every 5 youth.
• Safety is our highest concern. When you arrive we will give a safety talk and instructions on how to do your task. If you feel uncomfortable with a task or tool, be sure to ask for help.
• Habitat provides training on all construction tasks, big and small—do not worry if you don’t have skills or if you have difficulty learning at first. If you missed the instructions, do not be afraid to ask your site supervisor to show you what to do again. Relax and have fun! We are happy to teach you!
• Our primary concern is quality, not speed. Be sure to do the task up to the standard you would want on your home, even if it takes you a while.
• We can have as many as 100 volunteers at some work sites, so it may take a while for you to get assigned to a task. Please be patient with our volunteer-intensive process.
WHAT TO BRING:
• Bring your lunch to eat at the site if you are working an entire day. You will need coolers to store cold items.
• Bring a large bottle of water, with extra if necessary to get through an entire workday.
• Bring a good hat and sunscreen it is ESSENTIAL for most days March through October.
WHAT TO WEAR:
• Wear good work shoes – boots are best, no sandals or open-toed shoes will be allowed. Sneakers are OK.
• Wear clothes that can get dirty—you may get paint on your clothes even if you aren’t painting.
• Avoid loose fitting or baggy clothes.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact the Volunteer Services Manager at 833-1999 x223 or volunteer@habitatwake.org.
