Thrivent Builds
With a four-year $105 million commitment to sponsor homes, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is Habitat for Humanity International’s largest financial ally to help increase the non-profit housing ministry’s home building production. Nationwide, the need for an effort of this magnitude is great because:
- More than 13 million U.S. households use at least half of their income to pay for housing; and
- Millions more live in overcrowded conditions or housing with severe physical deficiencies, such as having no hot water, electricity or toilet.
Commenting on their first build with Habitat Wake, David Calloway, FIC Financial Consultant, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, said: “Watching the faces of the family dedicate their new home was an emotional moment. We feel that we have been able to join hands with many people of faith and be part of something very positive and significant. It's an enriching experience!”
The national Thrivent Builds project is an exciting opportunity for all area Lutheran churches to come together in fellowship and stewardship to provide housing for a local family in need. All who are affiliated with one of the Lutheran churches or who are Thrivent members (and who are at least 16 years old) are welcome and encouraged to volunteer on a Saturday construction day. No experience is necessary. Habitat Wake provides the training and tools.
- Thrivent Builds 2008 marks the third year of the Thrivent Builds national project and the second year of partication by Habitat Wake. We broke ground Saturday, April 26.

A Powerful Partnership
Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity brings together two national nonprofit networks of 1,699 Habitat affiliates and 1,364 Thrivent volunteer chapters. In 2007, the effort built homes in partnership with 355 American families. Locally, a coalition of Lutheran churches that enjoyed its first build with Habitat Wake in early 2007, joined the efforts with the Capital Area Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to raise money and recruit construction volunteers. The finished home is pictured at right. Read more.
