Carolina Hurricanes Build Walls for a Habitat Home
On Wednesday, December 13, 2006, Carolina Hurricanes players, coaches, staff and booster club members picked up hammers to get the construction started on a home for a family relocating to Wake County after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Working under the tutelage of Habitat construction staff and AmeriCorps staff on a grassy spot in front of the ticket sales office at the RBC Center, these volunteers constructed the walls in a one-day building effort. When the site is selected here in Raleigh for this home, the family will finish constructing it as part of their "sweat equity." They will have help from more people in Wake County with hammers, nails, measuring tapes and other construction tools that turn lumber, shingles and siding into a home. The National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association partnership have contributed $500,000 to Habitat for Humanity International in partnership to construct six homes. Habitat Wake is grateful for the $75,000 house sponsorship from the NHL and NHLPA as well as for the volunteer construction effort by the Carolina Hurricanes.
