The members of Christ Episcopal Church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox, St. Michael Catholic Church and Grace Community Church have a long-time partnership with Habitat Wake. Joining together to sponsor a home built over the summer in 2007, the faith groups shared a wonderful experience getting to know Thinh & Gli.

Habitat construction standards make homes comfortable, easy to maintain and affordable. Energy efficiency is achieved adhering to SystemVision™ standards through a program offered by the Raleigh-based nonprofit Advanced Energy®. For volunteers, this means some of their time is spent caulking and installing moisture barriers; for homeowners, this means they may participate in a program that lowers heating and cooling bills. (Average monthly heating and cooling bills range from $15-$40 per month.) The final report on this house indicated it was 'one of the tightest Habitat Wake houses tested.'

Many thanks to Sally & Bob for providing weekly updates and photos

Construction began the last Saturday in April with waterproofing the foundation. In May and early June, volunteers sheathed the house, installed the subfascia in preparation for the roof to be put on. One crew constructed flyover rafters, designed and built deck stairs with a mid-way platform, put in hurricane ties, installed the attic scuttle and framed the shed up to the roofline. As June progressed, volunteers installed the soffit and exterior doors as well as put a roof on the shed and began siding. Subcontractor plumbers and electricians did their rough-ins.

Thank you! Professional roofer Tom Buzzard (Tom Buzzard Roofing Co.) from Grace Community church installed the roof.

In July despite some daunting rain clouds, John Monaghan installed the insulation baffles. After the framing was inspected, the subcontractor drywall installers did their work. Volunteers installed siding and the back porch ceiling. Jerry and half the Grace team put the front high gable across the back of the house; others from Grace joined Hal to install siding on the front wall. 32 volunteers were on hand July 17 to put up the siding; each side of the house is actually five separate walls--three wide and two narrow--so a lot of work was involved on these sides. (With so many people, the crew used up most of Habitat's ladders and all their snips.) John Janeri's stair crew installed the porch stair treads and risers then began to fashion the stair rails. Priming and painting began in earnest by the end of July.
