Home Builders Blitz 2008

1 week…29 builders…5 homes
During the first week of June, a transformation will occur right here in Wake County that will make a difference in the lives of five families. The 29 local builders who make up the Triangle Builders Guild will build five homes – from start to finish for Home Builders Blitz 2008.

These builders are donating their expertise along with contributions of materials and labor from vendors and subcontractors. They have stepped up the challenge and are giving an amazing gift back to the community.

But even with their tremendous support, there are a number of costs not covered by gifts of time and materials – such as the cost of the land. If you would like to support this project, please consider making a contribution to the 2008 Home Builders Blitz. Every dollar you give will go toward this construction project.

With questions about donating to the 2008 Home Builders Blitz, please contact Nancy Jones, Director of Development & Communications, at 833.1999 x227 or nancy.jones@habitatwake.org.

Blueprint Breakfast 2008

In one hour, nearly 500 business leaders donated more than $170,000 at the 2008 Habitat Wake Blueprint Breakfast in April. We shared how Habitat Wake creates homeownership opportunities in Wake County and provided information how the community at large can be involved in our housing mission. Homeowners described the security and success they experienced as a result of their partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. As guests left, they signed well wishes on a framed wall that will be used to build a child's bedroom.

The event was underwritten by title sponsors CAI Communication and TriSure and event partners: BB&T, Fox50, Grant Thornton, Bubba and Barbara Rawl, Smith Anderson and Williams Mullen.

Thrivent Builds 2008

With a four-year $105 million commitment to sponsor homes, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is Habitat for Humanity International’s largest financial ally to help increase the non-profit housing ministry’s home building production. 2008 marks the third year of the Thrivent Builds project and the second year that Habitat Wake is participating.

The national Thrivent Builds project is an exciting opportunity for all area Lutheran churches to come together in fellowship and stewardship to provide housing for a local family in need. A few dozen volunteers joined the prospective homeowner on Saturday, April 26, 2008, to break ground on the build site. Eastern Wake News covered the event. (Read the story or see a brief video.) Recycle at the ReStore

As of April 2008, you can recycle your cans, glass, plastic containers, newspaper, mixed paper and cardboard at our City of Raleigh Recycling Drop-Off Center during store hours Tuesday - Saturday. The bins are behind the building across from the donation docks.

One bin is dedicated to Cans for Habitat. When you set up a Cans for Habitat program, you do two good things:

(1) protect the environment and
(2) help Habitat for Humanity build homes.

Cans for Habitat is a recycling partnership between Humanity of Wake County, you and Wise Recycling.

Community Carnival: Connecting People with Resources

Habitat Wake hosted our firstCommunity Carnival
Connecting People with Resources
event on May 4. We thank the more than 50 local organizations who provided information and tips to help people make everyday decisions to improve their lives and support their families.

Collegiate Challenge 2008

More than 100 student volunteers came from seven universities as part of Collegiate Challenge 2008.

The collegians nailed shingles, put on siding and built decks.

Two groups helped salvage materials on DeCon sites.

Community volunteers prepared lunches and six local churches hosted the collegiate groups overnight.

Kitchen Cabinet Campaign '08

We're aiming to collect 40 pre-owned kitchen cabinet sets. The proceeds from selling them at our ReStore will fund the construction of an entire home built by Habitat.

Are you remodeling your kitchen? Then, consider donating your cabinets. Call the Habitat Wake ReStore at 833-1999 x231 to make arrangements for us to remove the cabinets via our DeConstruction program or haul away the cabinets via our pick-up service.

Good reasons to donate:

Global Village

Through Global Village trips, Habitat for Humanity International gives participants the opportunity to raise awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent, affordable housing worldwide. Global village team members construct homes alongside members of the host community help build a true "global village" of love, homes, communities and hope! Two local volunteers are leaders for a trip in May 2008 to Hungary. (They have been involved with Habitat for Humanity for several years and have participated in Global Village builds in Ecuador, Brazil and Costa Rica.) If you are interested in helping to make a difference there, consider this Global Village trip in 2008.

New Home for Habitat Wake

To accelerate the growth of our homeownership program, we have expanded our home. Supporters cut a ribbon on Saturday, November 3. Our purpose-built facility at 2420 Raleigh Boulevard demonstrates our community's passion for helping neighbors in need. A key feature of this new facility is adequate space to provide pre- and post-purchase education for Habitat homeowners to support their success in paying their mortgages and maintaining their new homes.

With a convenient new location, the ReStore has been uniquely designed to better serve shoppers and donors. The anticipated increase in sales will provide essential financial support for our homeownership program while offering discounted new and used building materials to our community. Our expanding DeConstruction Program is another service to the community, as well as our new role as a City of Raleigh recycling site. (The bins will be in place later this fall in our parking lot.)

We are very grateful for all the support and friendship over our 22 years to make the mission of building safe, decent, affordable homes a reality for so many here in Wake County.
