Attiya

Reality can change in an instant. Attiya knows that firsthand. She was a student at a prestigious high school living in a home her parents had built. Four years later, she was a twenty-year-old single parent in college sharing a bedroom with her eldest son. Attiya’s family had owned a home since she was 5, but when her father left, her situation changed. “When my father left, I had to be the responsible one. I had to step up and do what was best for my family. I had to make a choice to fight or quit.  When I had my son, I had to make the same choice again. I was working two jobs and in college. I had no car, so I had to take the bus.”

Attiya finished school with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. “I had to come up with a plan and make a foundation. I was determined to still graduate on time, and I did that in December 2003 . My goal was to have a house by the time I was 25. I had a house at 24 through the help of Habitat for Humanity.”

Attiya had volunteered with Habitat throughout high school. She also knew someone that was a Habitat homeowner, but it still took her a year to get up the nerve to apply for a home. “I was afraid of rejection, but things worked out.” None of the services available to me were better than working with Habitat towards homeownership. Attiya has been a homeowner for 5 years. She is an Investor Service Assistant at a local bank. She is working on a license to sell and trade stock, a stepping stone to her dream – to become a financial consultant. She continues to be advocate and speaker for Habitat .
