Once Habitat Wake staff receive a "mini" application, applicants will receive a letter within 30 days. Click here to download a "mini" application.
It takes 10 - 14 months from submitting the application until the new house is ready for an applicant to move in. The timeline generally proceeds as follows:
The first 3-4 months: Habitat Wake staff process the application
The next 7-10 months: The prospective homeowner contributes "sweat equity"*
* Note: "Sweat equity" is Habitat's name for the labor that Habitat homeowners put towards building their houses and the houses of their neighbors. It allows the heads of household to work alongside volunteers, supports pride of ownership, and teaches skills. Homeowners do "sweat equity" after they are selected to be Habitat partners and in coordination with Habitat staff. The labor is completed before the Habitat homeowner moves into his/her new house. The labor can be home construction, stocking at the Habitat Wake ReStore or office support.
