AmeriCorps is a national service organization that offers young adults a way to give back to their communities. Members serve an 11 month term and receive a living stipend, insurance, and an education award at the completion of their service.
Since 2001, AmeriCorps members have been a valuable part of the Habitat Wake construction and deconstruction teams, and have partnered with us to build homes with families in Wake County.
The annual Build-a-Thon, held in the spring, brings together Habitat AmeriCorps members and alumni, and local volunteers, families and partners for intensive construction and service projects. Build-a-Thon events are typically a week long and are held in partnership with local communities and Habitat affiliates. The goal of the event is to help meet the host community’s needs for affordable housing, while celebrating national service with Habitat.
Olachi Anaemereibe, now a member of the Habitat Wake staff, was a second-year AmeriCorps member working with Habitat Wake when she took part in the 2015 Build-A-Thon in the New Orleans East neighborhood, on America Street. That experience completed a long-time desire to help the devastation in New Orleans. To read Olachi’s story, click here.
Fuquay-Varina will serve as one of three sites for the 2016 Build-A-Thon, beginning May 23. To learn more, visit the Build-A-Thon page.
